Security & Strategic Studies
The Department of Security and Strategic Studies (SSS) at AUK offers an interdisciplinary program which allows students to develop a solid background in related areas of security and strategic studies, defense policy, counterterrorism, conflict prevention and resolution, and energy and human security.
The Bachelor’s Degree in Security and Strategic Studies provides a solid foundation for diverse career options. These include those associated with the armed forces, law enforcement, government, diplomatic service, international development and business.

- Train students in theory and practice in security and strategic studies.
- Introduce students to the global security and strategic environment, as well as multidimensional aspects of security, in an increasingly globalized world.
- Develop students’ awareness of the causes and consequences of violent conflict.
- Enhance students’ understanding of the complex threat environment and security challenges in our interconnected world.
- Enable students to identify and analyze the motivations, objectives, strategies and modus operandi of state and non-state actors in the security field.
- Understanding of the role of state and non-state actors in the security field at national and global levels.
- Attainment of conceptual tools to engage in independent research on security and defense actors, including their activities, doctrines, strategies, and motivations.
- Acquisition of analytical skills to understand and analyze the dynamics and local and international dimensions of security challenges.
- Understanding transnational security and non-security threats, such as irregular and asymmetric warfare and the spread of infectious diseases.
- Grasp theoretical perspectives to examine terrorist and insurgent groups, their different characteristics, and aspects of countering the threats they pose.

- Intelligence Analyst:
work in the military, national security department, or police to collect and analyse operational intelligence data, compile mission reports and make security policy recommendations. - Policy Advisor:
Track and report policy developments of the state, regional states, donors and international organizations before making recommendations on how these effect your organization’s work. - Security Advisor:
advise on all safety and security related matters including the planning and implementation of projects, review projects proposals from a security perspective, analyse data to form proposals. - Law Enforcement Officer:
work to ensure the safety of the community by investigating crimes and apprehend suspected criminals, respond to various situations or emergencies, draft and implement policies to keep the community safe. - Risk Manager:
analyse and communicate risk policies and processes for an organisation in the public or private sector.
- Minimum 3.5 years, upon the successful completion of 12 courses per year.
- Standard 4 years, upon the successful completion of 10 courses per year.
- Maximum 5 years, upon the successful completion of 8 courses per year.
