The American University of Kurdistan honors the events of March 1991, when Kurds in Iraq took to the streets, sparking an uprising that would continue for nearly a month. It laid the groundwork for what would later become the autonomous Kurdistan Region.
The initial uprising began on March 5, 1991, in the town of Raniya. It soon spread to Erbil, Slemani, Dohuk, and Kirkuk, where the security forces of Saddam Hussein’s regime were ousted.
