AUK College of Nursing Hosts 2nd Capping, Candle Lighting, and White Coat Ceremony
On October 5, 2024, the American University of Kurdistan (AUK) College of Nursing held its 2nd Annual Capping, Candle Lighting, and White Coat Ceremony, marking a significant milestone for 10 nursing students advancing to the clinical phase of their education. Family and friends gathered to celebrate their success in the Auditorium of the University.
This year’s event, themed “Bridging Excellence: Elevating Local Nursing Practice to Global Standards,” emphasized the College’s focus on integrating local nursing practices with international standards of care and professional excellence. The ceremony incorporated traditional elements such as the capping, symbolizing the students’ transition into professional education; the candle lighting, representing their commitment to compassionate care; and the donning of the white coat, signifying their readiness to begin clinical practice.
The keynote address was delivered by Ms. Steffaney Thomas, an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with a Master’s degree in Nurse-Midwifery. Ms. Thomas, who has been working in the Duhok area for the last three and a half years, co-founded the Whole Women Initiative, providing postpartum services to women and babies in local refugee camps. She is also actively involved in bringing evidence-based changes to the care women receive at Duhok Maternity Hospital. In her address, Ms. Thomas emphasized the importance of evidence-based practice, compassion, and communication, encouraging the graduating class to uphold these values throughout their nursing careers.
Dr. Jervy Bernardino, Dean of the College of Nursing, expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments: “We are proud to recognize the achievements of our students as they reach this important milestone. The ceremony reflects our commitment to fostering excellence that aligns with global best practices in nursing.”
The event was also attended by members of the AUK community, who joined in honoring the students’ progress and supporting their continued journey in the nursing profession.
