Erbil, Kurdistan Region – September 6th, 2020 – At a press conference at the Erbil International Airport alongside KRG’s Minister of Health, Dr. Saman Barzanji, the President of The American University of Kurdistan, Dr. Randall Rhodes, announced the arrival of the second consignment of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) donations mobilized by AUK’s Dean of Nursing, Dr. Susie Chen. The shipment was handed over to the Ministry of Health for distribution to hospitals and IDP camps throughout Kurdistan.
“As part of its mission, AUK believes in employing its faculty, staff, and resources to benefit Kurdistan and the health and well-being of its people… We are proud and humbled to be part of this initiative and donation, “stated Dr. Rhodes.
In the press conference, which was covered live by Kurdistan24 and Rudaw Media Network, Dr. Barzanji, praised AUK’s efforts for providing Kurdistan’s health sector with the necessary PPE and highlighted the importance of NGOs and NPOs in taking responsibility during crises like the current COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is not the first time that the American University of Kurdistan has given to the community, and we hope that all other Universities and entities can follow their lead and provide the necessary support to overcome this crisis, whether by donations or raising awareness,” stated Dr. Barzanji.
The 183 cartons contained protective coveralls, isolation gowns, gloves, face shields, goggles, masks, and respirators. “The PPE will go to the essential workers in healthcare at the public hospitals, designated COVID-10 hospitals and also IDP camps,” confirmed Dr. Susie Chen.
Since July, AUK has coordinated the donation of a total of 259 cartons of PPE to Kurdistan, making it the first university in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq to provide such equipment as a demonstration of its appreciation for the tireless efforts of front-line healthcare workers.
