Overview

Mission

The American University of Kurdistan’s student-run radio station, Leopard Radio, broadcasts at 98.7 FM,
providing a vibrant, inclusive, and innovative platform for student voices. Established in Spring 2024 and
funded by the U.S. Department of State’s ‘Supporting American-Style Higher Education in Iraq’ grant, Leopard
Radio features diverse, student-led programming designed to both inform and inspire. Our mission is to promote
the University’s values and serve as a cultural and intellectual hub, connecting the university community with
the broader region.

History

Leopard Radio began broadcasting on March 13, 2024, and was established with funds generously provided to the
American University of Kurdistan (AUK) by the people of the United States through the US Embassy in Baghdad,
Iraq, and the US Consulate in Erbil, Kurdistan. The purposes of this station are the promotion of the mission of
the American University of Kurdistan to serve the people of Kurdistan, of Iraq, and of the greater region. An
equally important goal is to provide training in broadcasting and multimedia techniques and practices to AUK
students, to foster critical thinking and analysis skills, and to provide job skills to help our students find
employment after graduation.

AUK Leopard Radio, 98.7 FM, broadcasts 24/7 from its transmitter atop Zawa Mountain in Duhok, Kurdistan, with a
power of 2000 watts. Leopard Radio began streaming online on our website in Fall 2024, bringing the message of
AUK to a global audience and giving our students additional exposure in broadcast journalism in the modern era.
