This programmatic mission is accomplished through a variety of courses within the framework of a liberal arts education encompassing social sciences, natural sciences, math, arts and humanities. Collectively, they ensure that every AUK graduate has attained a level of fluency in these skill sets and understandings of ethics and values important for becoming global citizens of the 21st century.
The educational objectives of the GE curriculum are collectively accomplished through courses in 8 categories. Common student learning outcomes, to be demonstrated in the listed courses, include the students’ abilities to:
• Demonstrate critical thinking and effective communication skills;
• Demonstrate the knowledge of scientific methods in exploring the natural and social sciences;
• Integrate and apply IT skills;
• Integrate and apply quantitative and analytical reasoning;
• Demonstrate interdisciplinary models of enquiry to address complex issues; and
• Recognize the global citizenship qualities of personal integrity, accountability, social and cultural tolerance, well being, and environmental sustainability.
Skill and knowledge building occurs throughout the students’ academic careers, therefore students will be taking these courses throughout the four to five years of their academic studies. It is recommended that during their freshman year, students have a 3-2 course split between GE and their introductory program courses. The skill sets and knowledge attained in GE courses should complement the disciplinary learning in the program courses and reinforce the dispositions required in the specialized learning. The last course in the Program – The Interdisciplinary
Seminar/Capstone – can only be taken in the junior or senior year as it requires a higher level of critical thinking and disciplinary understanding, and serves to bridge the learning experiences of GE with students’ specializations via project-based teaching-learning modalities. As per U.S. Accreditation expectations, the GE courses constitute a minimum of 40 credit hours within every bachelor’s degree. In the model here presented, students complete these credits by selecting courses from the 8 categories as per the required distribution. NOTE: Courses can be double-dipped between the major program and General Education requirements.
