A. How to Get Started with Project-Based Learning in K-12 and Beyond

Workshop Facilitator: Irshat Madyarov

Workshop Overview and Objectives:

Current research and practice show that, when done right, project-based learning (PBL) enhances students’ learning and engagement across different subject areas and educational levels. This workshop introduces PBL for K-12 and beyond educators. The participants first learn about basic principles of PBL through real-world examples and then create a PBL idea to be implemented in their own teaching context. By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned to:

By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned to:
1. create an environment for students to actively communicate their ideas to their classmates;
2. enhance students’ critical thinking through collaboration and group work; and

3. Emotional Intelligence

A. Reflection as a Path to Deeper Learning

Workshop Facilitator: Dr. Michael John King

Workshop Overview and Objectives:

Some promoted methodologies are faddish and die. Others are considered faddish and are overlooked. Reflection is one of the latter, probably due to its perceived subjectivity. However, its link to higher cognitive thinking in our critical thinking-focused world requires us to rethink our position on its usefulness. This session aims to dispel the myth that students are incapable of reflecting about their learning environment and argues for reflection to be included in assessment practices. Participants are asked to interact in reflecting on reflective assessment examples shared and to consider their use in their own contexts. By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned to:
1. apply simple reflective assessment tasks in their class;
2. reflect on how they might adapt these tasks to their contexts; and
3. appreciate how student reflection can improve teaching.

B. Effective Strategies for Managing Autism in the Classroom

Workshop Facilitator: Meghry Bedirian

Workshop Overview and Objectives:

This workshop provides participants with practical strategies to manage autism-related behaviors in inclusive classrooms. It begins with an overview of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), focusing on key characteristics according to the DSM-5 and addressing common misconceptions. Participants are to identify common autism-related behaviors seen in classroom settings and explore proactive interventions to effectively manage them. The workshop is essential for educators working with diverse learners, as it expands their understanding of ASD and equips them with positive strategies. By creating a supportive learning environment, educators can enhance the well-being of students and put them on the path to success. By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned to:
1. identify the core characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and explain the concepts of antecedents, behavior, and consequences (ABC rule);
2. apply effective reinforcement principles to encourage positive behaviors; and
3. implement proactive strategies to manage maladaptive behaviors in the classroom.

4. Assessment

A. Deep Learning and Surface Learning in the Light of Bloom’s Taxonomy

Workshop Facilitator: Karmand Abdulla Hamad

Workshop Overview and Objectives:

This workshop focuses on surface and deep learning and tries to delineate these two concepts based on Bloom’s taxonomy with an aim to help educators question their assumptions about teaching and learning processes and teaching strategies that are primarily content-oriented and promote surface learning. The workshop intends to offer a practical framework for educators to shift from surface-level teaching to promoting deeper, more meaningful learning experiences through adopting a rather constructive and facilitative model of teaching that is more learner and learning-oriented. By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned to:
1. design learning activities and conducive learning environment that promote higher-order thinking;
2. implement practical strategies to help students move from surface-level memorization to deep learning, where they can analyze, synthesize, and apply knowledge in new contexts; and
3. develop teaching strategies that encourage deep learning in classrooms.

B. Using Objective Measures to Provide Constructive Feedback

Workshop Facilitator: Jody Saleem

Workshop Overview and Objectives:

This interactive workshop focuses on using objective measures, such as rubrics, to provide constructive feedback in the classroom. Participants explore how tools like rubrics promote fairness and clarity, ensuring students understand expectations and performance. Through collaborative activities, participants design subject-specific rubrics and practice using them to provide feedback. This session encourages the use of structured assessments to enhance learning outcomes and foster student growth. By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned to:
1. design and implement subject-specific rubrics to provide clear, objective feedback to students;
2. apply rubric-based assessments to ensure consistency and fairness in evaluating student work across various assignments; and
