AUK Center for Peace and Human Security Hosts Webinar with U.S. Chamber of Commerce
As part of its Monthly Lecture and Seminar Series, the American University of Kurdistan’s Center for Peace and Human Security (CPHS) hosted a webinar featuring key representatives from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The distinguished speakers, Mr. Steve Lutes, Vice President of the Chamber’s Middle East Affairs Division, and Ms. Jenna Artuso, Manager of the Chamber’s Middle East Affairs Division, shared their insights on fostering connections between U.S. companies and the Kurdistan Region, with a focus on encouraging investment and strengthening the capacity of the local private sector.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Jiyar Aghapouri, Director of the CPHS, welcomed the speakers and participants. He outlined CPHS’ vision, emphasizing the role of trade and business in promoting sustainable peace and security. Dr. Aghapouri elaborated on how fostering economic growth through business ties can stabilize regions affected by conflict and promote long-term prosperity by building local capacities and reducing unemployment.
Mr. Lutes and Ms. Artuso provided their analysis of promising sectors in the region. From energy and infrastructure to technology and education, they highlighted digital services, healthcare, and renewable energy, noting that these industries had been a focus of recent discussions between the U.S. Chamber and the Kurdistan Regional Government during the KRG Prime Minister’s recent visit to the U.S.
The speakers underscored the U.S. Chamber’s critical role in promoting sustainable investments. They also offered advice on navigating the regulatory landscape in Iraq and the Middle East, as well as strategies for fostering greater awareness and cooperation among U.S. companies looking for qualified talent from Kurdistan.
AUK President Dr. Randall Rhodes emphasized the importance of aligning classroom learning with real-world employment opportunities. He stressed that the University should actively seek to bring business prospects to students, helping bridge the gap between academic knowledge and professional success.
The U.S. Chamber invited attendees to share their contact information to receive updates on future events and career opportunities. The webinar gave students a glimpse into the world of international business and diplomacy, providing them with resources to explore opportunities with U.S. companies.
