AUK Celebrates Multiculturalism Day: A Festival of Culture, Cuisine, and Community
On October 29, 2024, The American University of Kurdistan (AUK) came alive with celebrations for Multiculturalism Day, organized by AUK’s Student Government, student clubs, and sponsored by the Lutheran World Federation and University of Duhok. The two-day event, held in the Back Yard Garden of the Mustafa Barzani Building, showcased diverse traditions, foods, and arts from Kurdistan and around the world.
Kurdish tables highlighted the culture of cities like Duhok, Zakho, Halabja, Sulaymaniyah, Kirkuk, and Erbil, featuring traditional attire, Rash mal tents, Gupal, woven rugs, and local delicacies. Visitors also explored tables representing the Yazidi, Muslim, and Christian communities.
International tables representing France, America, and Armenia offered insights into unique traditions and national landmarks. The American table featured a display on the Statue of Liberty, while other tables celebrated cultural diversity.
Interactive activities included a photo booth and a display of international flags and greetings in multiple languages. The Kurdish food tables, managed by licensed cooks, served authentic dishes like Dolma and Pacha.
The event also featured nine local artists from Duhok University displaying their work along with a live musical performance. Multiculturalism Day celebrated AUK’s diverse community and underscored the university’s commitment to global unity and understanding.
