The bachelor’s degrees at AUK involve four years of study, except for Architectural Engineering, which takes five
years. The bachelor’s degree is awarded upon completion of 120-130 credits. Architectural Engineering requires the
completion of 150-151 credits. The details of each of the Academic Departments and the undergraduate study plans, as
well as student life and the policies are available in the Catalog.
AUK reserves the right to revise the programs’ study plans. Revised study plans will be published with a date for
implementation; students entering those bachelor’s programs as of the published date will follow the revised plans.
Revisions will not impact students currently matriculated and registered for their academic courses. Current
students will have the option of migrating to the new study plans but will need to complete a form in the Admission
and Registration Department (ARD).
In order for a student to graduate with a bachelor’s degree, his/her Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) should be
at least 2.0 and above. Students who have less than a 2.0 CGPA will not graduate regardless of the number of credits
earned, and they will need to take extra courses until their CGPA reaches the required threshold for graduation.
Students’ Course Grades are posted by the ARD not later than five business days after the conclusion of semester
final examinations.
The grade point scale is as follows:
Grade Description Points | Score | Quality Points |
---|---|---|
A | 90 – 100 | 4 |
A- | 87 – 89 | 3.67 |
B+ | 84 – 86 | 3.33 |
B | 80 – 83 | 3 |
B- | 77 – 79 | 2.67 |
C+ | 74 – 76 | 2.33 |
C | 70 – 73 | 2 |
C- | 67 – 69 | 1.67 |
D+ | 64 – 66 | 1.33 |
D (Minimum Passing Grade) | 60 – 63 | 1 |
F | 0 – 59 | 0 |
“I”: Incomplete | No effect on GPA |
“IP”: In Progress | No effect on GPA |
“W”: Withdrawal | No effect on GPA |
“WF”: Withdraw Fail | Zero 0 |
“TR”: Transfer, Credit Counted | No effect on GPA |
GPA Calculation
The grade point average (GPA) is the weighted mean value of all grade points earned in courses taken at AUK. To
calculate the GPA of a certain semester; the grade value for each completed course is based on the grade that the
student obtains in the course: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0. For each course, the grade point (GP) is obtained by
multiplying the course’s credits by grade value obtained; and for the grade point average (GPA) divide the total
grade points by the total credits attempted as in the table below:
Course Code | Course Grade Obtained | No. of Course Credits | Grade Value X No. of Course Credits |
Grade Points (GPs) Achieved |
---|---|---|---|---|
ENG100 | A = 4 | 3 | 4 x 3 | 12 |
ENG101 | B = 3 | 4 | 3 x 4 | 12 |
ENG113 | B = 3 | 3 | 3 x 3 | 9 |
HIS104 | D = 1 | 1 | 1 x 1 | 1 |
HUM103 | C = 2 | 2 | 2 x 2 | 4 |
Total Credits Attempted = 13
Total GPs = 38
Calculated GPA = 38 / 13 = 2.9
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)
The CGPA is calculated by dividing the sum of the grade points earned by the total credit value of the courses that have been attempted (remained registered to the end of the semester). In this respect, courses with four or higher credit hours have a greater effect on the GPA. Moreover, improving the GPA becomes harder with the progression of the study because the more credits a student has completed, the less impact grade points have when the CGPA is calculated.
Credit Hour Definition
According to the U.S. Federal Definition of a credit hour, a credit hour typically consists of one hour (50 minutes) of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work. This translates to a total student workload of approximately three hours per week for one-course credit during the fall and spring semesters.
To break it down further:
- One credit hour includes approximately 15 academic hours of faculty-led instruction per semester (equivalent to 750 minutes of class time) and at least 30 hours of out-of-class student work.
- Each credit requires a student time commitment of approximately 3 hours per week.
When it comes to calculating the number of minutes of faculty-led instruction per semester, the following conversions are used:
- 1 credit equals 750 minutes of faculty-led instruction per semester (class time only) and at least 1500 minutes of out-of-class work.
- 2 credits equal 1500 minutes of faculty-led instruction per semester (class time only) and at least 3000 minutes of out-of-class work.
- 3 credits equal 2250 minutes of faculty-led instruction per semester (class time only) and at least 4500 minutes of out-of-class work.
- 4 credits equal 3000 minutes of faculty-led instruction per semester (class time only) and at least 6000 minutes of out-of-class work.
The exact number of minutes per credit hour also applies to summer semesters. However, since the timeline is shorter (typically eight weeks), the number of minutes per week per course is increased to meet the expectations of minutes of faculty-led instruction per semester.
