​​​​​​​​​​​​Duhok, Kurdistan Region, March 31, 2026 – The Center for Peace and Human Security at the American University of Kurdistan hosted a webinar titled “The Middle East on the Edge of Change: Where Do Kurds Stand?” The session was chaired by Dr. Jiyar Aghapouri, Director of the CPHS, and featured four distinguished scholars: Professor David Romano from Missouri State University, Dr. Khalid Khayati from Linköping University in Sweden, Dr. Negar Partow from Indiana University Bloomington, and Dr. Serhun Al from Izmir University of Economics in Türkiye.

"At a moment of heightened regional uncertainty, universities have a responsibility not only to educate but also to convene meaningful conversations that inform both public understanding and policy thinking," said Dr. Aghapouri. The speakers discussed recent developments in the Middle East and how ongoing conflicts and political changes are affecting the Kurdistan Region. They noted that while the Region has tried to stay neutral, it continues to face security risks and political pressure.

The speakers also reflected on what these developments could mean for Kurds in the coming years, pointing to both ongoing challenges and possible opportunities. Several highlighted that the situation remains uncertain, especially with shifting regional alliances and internal divisions. As one speaker noted, “this is a moment of change, but also a moment of uncertainty,” emphasizing that outcomes will depend on how both regional and international actors respond. The discussion also touched on developments in neighboring countries and how they may influence the Kurdish position.

Dr. Aghapouri noted that "bringing together diverse expert perspectives on such a complex and rapidly evolving issue is central to CPHS's mission of connecting academic analysis with real-world policy debates."
