Fall 2025 New Student Orientation Kicks Off a New Academic Year at AUK
On August 23, 2025, the American University of Kurdistan (AUK) hosted its Fall 2025 New Student Orientation to welcome incoming freshmen to campus. Organized by the Office of Student Affairs, the event aimed to introduce students to American-style education, campus resources, and opportunities for engagement.
The day began with information sessions featuring AUK President Dr. Randall Rhodes, Provost Dr. Triona Croke, the Chair of General Education, Dr. Catherine Buon, representatives from the Office of Student Affairs, and Peer Mentor Leaders. Students then joined Peer Mentors for a campus tour to familiarize themselves with AUK’s facilities.
The Peer Mentoring Program is a core component of the New Student Orientation and First-Year Experience, designed to ensure a smooth and welcoming transition for incoming freshmen. The program’s primary goal is to create a supportive environment where new students can connect, make friends, and feel a sense of belonging from the start. Peer Mentors are trained upper-classmen who serve as guides, role models, and resources throughout the incoming students’ first semester.
Over the past two months, Peer Mentors have been actively working with the Office of Student Affairs in planning and organizing orientation events. Their dedication and insights have been the driving force in designing the curriculum, ensuring a welcoming and student-centered experience. Freshmen participate in six structured peer mentoring sessions throughout the semester. These sessions focus on key areas such as academic success strategies, time management, campus involvement, navigating university resources, building healthy habits, and managing stress.
The orientation also featured engaging activities led by students, with participants winning vouchers to the AUK Store. The Wellbeing Services booth offered a spin-the-wheel game where students explored health facts and myths and won AUK merchandise.
Freshmen were also introduced to student leadership opportunities, including the Student Government and Student Clubs, encouraging them to get involved in campus life and build connections within the AUK community.
