CAPA Hosts Inaugural “She Leads” Graduation Featuring the Release of Untold
On November 27, 2024, the Center for Academic and Professional Advancement (CAPA) at the American University of Kurdistan (AUK) celebrated the graduation of 51 women from the inaugural “She Leads” Women Leadership Certificate Program. Supported by a U.S. Department of State grant, Supporting American-Style Higher Education in Iraq, the program also provided scholarships to 20 AUK students and alumni.
The ceremony spotlighted graduates’ achievements, with participants sharing personal stories of growth and the leadership skills gained through the program. The event also featured the launch of Untold, an anthology of inspiring stories from women in the Kurdistan Region, showcasing their resilience and triumphs.
Kurdish artist Dashni Morad delivered a heartfelt speech:
“This program is exactly what I needed in my twenties. It could have been so helpful. But I’m so glad knowing that we’re making progress.”
AUK President Dr. Randall Rhodes reinforced the University’s dedication to empowering women:
“Our goal is to ensure that AUK students and alumni have the confidence and tools to succeed, to teach negotiation and other skills, and to empower them to overcome challenges, grow their support network, and achieve self-actualization.”
Keynote speaker Kala Bokelman, Regional Security Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil, emphasized the power of mentorship:
“None of this is accomplished alone. Mentorship, friendship, and support from other women are vital. Programs like She Leads empower women, which is the fastest way to transform society.”
CAPA Director Loucine Hayes expressed pride in the graduates, saying:
“My heart is truly full today as we celebrate these unique and inspiring women.”
The She Leads program, inspired by Through the Labyrinth by Alice Eagly and Linda L. Carli, equips participants with essential leadership and soft skills like negotiation, emotional intelligence, and achieving work-life balance. Plans are underway to expand the program to Erbil.
The graduation of participants and the release of Untold mark a significant step in fostering women’s leadership and amplifying their voices in shaping a more equitable society.
