B.A. in International Studies

International Studies

The world we live in is incredibly complex, often difficult to fully grasp or interpret. Questions may arise about how Kurdish representatives can influence Iraq’s position on the global stage, or what role the United Nations plays in resolving conflicts across the Middle East. Other points of curiosity might include how climate change is reshaping patterns of migration and affecting global security, or why the European Union is currently engaged in intense debates about its future direction. For those interested in exploring such issues, the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies at the American University of Kurdistan (AUK) offers an ideal path for academic and professional development.

While International Studies and International Relations are closely related, they are not identical. International Relations (IR) is primarily rooted in political science and focuses on the interactions between nations through the lenses of diplomacy, international law, and economics. It examines the behavior of states, foreign policy strategies, the roles of international organizations such as the United Nations and NATO, and issues related to global security and conflict resolution. IR also delves into the international political economy and trade, emphasizing power dynamics, national interests, and strategic decision-making on the global stage. For example, students in IR might analyze the causes of war, assess the effectiveness of international treaties, or study how trade agreements impact national economies. International Studies (IS), on the other hand, takes a broader, interdisciplinary approach. While it incorporates the core elements of IR, it also draws from the social sciences and humanities to provide a more holistic understanding of global issues. Students in IS explore the cultural, historical, and social structures of various nations, and engage with pressing global challenges such as human rights, environmental sustainability, and international development. The curriculum often includes linguistic and regional studies, allowing students to gain deeper insights into the diverse contexts that shape international affairs.

At AUK, the International Studies program is designed to combine the strengths of both IR and IS, offering students a comprehensive and well-rounded education that is both globally informed and deeply rooted in regional realities. One of the program’s defining features is its unified curriculum, which means students are not required to choose between separate tracks. Instead, they receive a balanced education that encompasses politics, history, law, languages, and global affairs. This integrated approach ensures that graduates are equipped with a broad and versatile skill set.

What truly sets AUK’s program apart is its regional relevance. Courses such as Kurdish Studies, Politics and Society in the Middle East, and KRG Constitutional Law provide students with a nuanced understanding of the local context, while encouraging them to think critically about global dynamics. The program also maintains a strong real-world focus, encouraging students to explore contemporary issues such as the impact of the war in Ukraine on NATO, the influence of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, and the ways in which BRICS nations are challenging Western economic dominance.

Students will graduate with career-ready skills that prepare them for a wide range of professional paths. Whether your goal is to work in government, diplomacy, non-governmental organizations, or international institutions, you will be equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to lead and serve effectively in a globalized world.
