AUK Students Lead Initiative for a Smoke-Free Campus
The American University of Kurdistan (AUK) has established a Smoking Restriction policy, marking a significant step toward creating a healthier and more welcoming environment. The initiative was driven by students, who raised concerns about the effects of secondhand smoke on their wellbeing. Responding to these concerns, the Student Government partnered with the University to develop and implement the new policy.
To raise awareness, the Office of Student Affairs organized a series of interactive activities. Three tables were set up at the student entrance area: an informational table providing flashcards and posters on the harms of smoking, along with brown ribbons for students to wear; a photo booth featuring a new “No Smoking” backdrop; and a table with snacks and sweets to encourage participation. Campus signage has also been installed in previously popular smoking areas to reinforce the new restrictions.
The campaign will continue with an upcoming workshop hosted by the Health Promotion Officer. The session will educate students on the risks of tobacco use, offer practical strategies for quitting, and provide resources and support for those ready to pursue a tobacco-free lifestyle.
Through collaboration between students and the University, AUK is taking meaningful steps to ensure a healthier, smoke-free campus for all.
