AUK Celebrates First Homecoming with a Grand Mascot Reveal
On February 18, 2025, the American University of Kurdistan (AUK) marked a historic milestone by hosting its first-ever Homecoming event, embracing a cherished American tradition. The celebration began with an opening speech by AUK President Dr. Randall Rhodes, who highlighted the significance of Homecoming as a way to strengthen the university’s community spirit and student-alumni connections.
Next, Senior Coordinator of Alumni Relations & Events, Farah Ali, introduced the winners of two alumni awards: Service to Community Award and Service to the Alma Mater. Rozhan Shro and Maryna Sera were the respective awardees.
The highlight of the event was the highly anticipated mascot reveal. In a grand entrance accompanied by drumming, CENGO the Leopard appeared from behind the event backdrop. His name, meaning “Warrior” in Kurdish, embodies strength, resilience, and the bold spirit of AUK and its community. A line of branded merchandise with the insignia of the University and face of the mascot was launched. The AUK store will open on Sunday, February 23.
Adding to the festivities, the Student Government organized a friendly, student sports tournament. The event concluded with Ali Hussein, President of the Student Government announcing the tournament winners and thanking the officers of the Student Government for their support.
With this inaugural Homecoming, AUK has set the stage for more spirited celebrations dedicated to building community. Watch for CENGO; he will be everywhere!
