The American University of Kurdistan (AUK)
hosted the first-ever student-led TEDx event
on its campus on October 1, 2022. The theme
was ‘ChangeAble’; the objective of program
was to promote fresh perspectives on
personal and societal advancements both
within Kurdistan and beyond.

The initiative was spearheaded by Amena
Mohammed, student of AUK’s Architectural
Engineering Program, who attained the
license from Tedx and oversaw the months of
logistical planning, auditioning and
training of speakers, and communications
plan.
According to Amena, "as a team of young
people, students, got together with one aim
in mind, which was to inspire the ability to
change. As the term 'changeable' shows,
everyone yields the potential to make a
positive change”.

AUK
Hosts Intercollegiate Table Tennis
Tournament
|
The American University of Kurdistan (AUK)
hosted a Table Tennis Tournament on October
5-6 for the six universities within the
Duhok Governorate: AUK, University of Duhok,
University of Zakho, Duhok Polytechnic,
Cihan University, and Nawroz University. The
men’s tournament featured singles and teams’
competitions.
In the singles final, Pirs Ali of Nawroz
University defeated Araz Rasheed of AUK.
“It was a great experience competing at this
high level. Some of the players from the
other universities were professionals, but
we as AUK players still did a great job and
were able to keep up with them,” said Aras.
In the team competition finals, the
University of Duhok defeated Nawroz
University.
The tournament was organized by Kavok
Mohammed, a student of Business Management
at AUK and the Director of the Tennis Club.
The tournament was made possible with the
support of Viya Institute and Pling Company.

Express & Data Quest
Partnership

Duhok, Kurdistan Region – October 6, 2022.
We are pleased to announce that The Center
for Academic and Professional Advancement
(CAPA) at the American University of
Kurdistan (AUK) is the first institution in
Duhok to offer the project management
course, P3. express, in a partnership with
Data Quest.
On October 6, 2022, in the auditorium at
AUK, CAPA announced its official partnership
with Data Quest. At the event, Frank Turly
(the co-founder of P3. express) virtually
spoke on the advantages of the P3. express
framework. A panel discussion followed and
discussed how project management
methodologies and specially, P3. express,
can prepare individuals from all sectors to
better manage their projects, businesses,
and start-ups. This is a 12-hour program,
which delivers practical applications in an
easy, simplified format.
The panel discussion was moderated by CAPA’s
Jarjis Jarjis and the panellists included:
AUK’s President, Dr. Randall Rhodes, Mr Amed
Latif, the Managing Director of Data Quest,
Dr. Dara Sherwani , the AUK Department Chair
of Computer Science and Information
Technology, Ms. Sinbl Yakoob, AUK faculty
member from the College of Business and Mr.
Raffi Simonian, the Executive Director at
UCLA’s Samueli School of Engineering, who
joined virtually.

The American University of Kurdistan (AUK)
successfully organized and presented its
first ever Alumni Reunion on October 15th,
2022.
The Director of Advancement, Ms. Manal Issa
and the AUK Advancement team, Senior
Coordinator, Ms. Wan Sanaan, Alumni & Events
Administrator, Ms. Farah Ali, and
Advancement Assistant, Mr. Ararat Amedi,
organized the event.
This occasion marks the start of a new
custom for AUK, bringing alumni back to the
campus where their higher education careers
started. This was a great opportunity for
the Alumni to reunite with their classmates,
professors, and deans to celebrate their
successes and hear about all that is new at
AUK.
The event was staged in the Garden Venue and
attended by over 100 alumni and 30 faculty
and staff, all of whom enjoyed the lively
program and catching up since last seeing
each other. Numerous alumni success stories
were shared with the audience.

The American University of Kurdistan (AUK)
welcomed prospective students and their
parents to campus on October 22, 2022.
Visitors learned about the educational model
at AUK, talked to the deans and faculty
about the academic programs, and heard about
the co-curricular and extra-curricular
activities.
The event began with an informational
session in the auditorium; participants then
attended presentations on the academic
programs, and gathered for an award
ceremony honoring high school students who
participated in the “Design for Strays”
contest. High school students from across
Duhok accepted the challenge to innovatively
design a kennel that shelters strays, dogs
or cats. The First Prize winners were from
Bright Future School; the People's Choice
Award went to students from Sarmad School,
and students from the Duhok British
International School received an honorable
mention.
Fatima Osman, Coordinator of Student
Recruitment and organizer of Open Day
stated: “The combination of American style
education, academic programs offered at AUK,
and the vibrant student life is what makes
AUK your path to excellence, and that is
what the community saw during the Open Day”.

Multi-Cultural
Week at AUK
|
The American University of Kurdistan (AUK)
organized a number of activities, from
October 10 to 13, 2022, to advance
multicultural awareness and ensure that AUK
employees and students are dedicated to the
values of non-discrimination and
inclusivity.
Activities included: presentations on the
home cultures of our international faculty,
the screening of a movie focused on the
comparison and contrast of different
cultures, a panel discussion of diasporans
who returned to Kurdistan to live and work,
a outdoor festival featuring local
handicrafts, and a Kurdish Dilan.
Zana Salah, the Executive Assistant at the
President’s Office and organizer of
multi-cultural week stated: “Celebrating
multiculturalism week and appreciating the
way diversity enriches AUK fosters a better
community as it enables staff and students
to understand and appreciate the history,
life experiences and beliefs of diverse
groups of people.”
