Energy Feasibility Study A project exploring the potential for implementing a sustainable energy solution at the Domiz 1 Refugee Camp was launched - and coordinated - by Dr. Jack R. Williams, Adjunct Professor of International Relations at the American University of Kurdistan. Project partners include Atmosfair (a non-profit carbon offsetting company based in Germany), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Selco Foundation. A number of AUK alumni were recruited as junior field researchers to assist in the feasibility study, collecting data on the social and economic situation of camp residents, including their current use of electricity.
New Students’ Orientation Organized by AUK’s Student Government (SG), a welcoming event was held at the Auditorium for new students enrolled in the Spring 2022 semester. At this event, they were introduced to AUK’s American-style education, deans and heads of our colleges/departments, administrative units, and AUK's extensive library. A complete campus tour ended with snacks at the refreshments bar in the Game Area, concluding the event.
Meet Our Alumni Dezheen Mohammed Ahmed Graduated in 2019 with B.A. in Design
In January of 2015, Dezheen chose to attend AUK and study Interior Design. Dezheen found the AUK college experience very fundamental in terms of growing as a person. When most people think of college, some of the first words that come to mind are majors, boards, and diplomas, but to Dezheen it was more than that. She took advantage of those four years of studying to their fullest to earn knowledge, joy, and face challenges. “AUK taught me to believe in myself, nothing is impossible if you really want it” Dezheen’s new found confidence pushed her to open her own business, develop her own brand, and make one of her biggest dreams come true. Today, Dezheen is the first female interior designer to open her own interior design office called Space Design in Duhok city. She credits AUK for the knowledge she obtained that helped her tremendously in becoming a successful interior designer and business woman. Meet Our Students Jalal Ammar College of Arts and Science “We are the people of today, not yesterday.”
Jamal Ammar is a sophomore at AUK’s Design Department. He had to teach himself multiple art techniques, including painting, sketching and ceramic sculpting, in order to convince his family that medicine, engineering, and law were not the only options for a successful future. While growing up in Jordan, he studied at the Cambridge High School in Amman and later at the American University of Madaba (AUM), where he held his first art exhibition, before transferring to AUK. How and when did you discover your talent for visual arts? When I was 16 years old, I started exploring new hobbies and activities to find a passion. I always liked philosophy and literature. I am also very much into music production, but I never could see myself doing those professionally. It’s in Visual Arts where I can genuinely unfold my personality and express myself the best. How did you come to live in Kurdistan and study at AUK? My family has crossed the entire Middle East. I was born in Baghdad; we moved to Egypt and then to Jordan, where I grew up. I must admit, being now in Duhok finally feels like home. I transferred to AUK because I believe the environment fits my free-thinker personality while receiving a first-class American-style education. |
